Owners of the iconic tower dropped its longtime name Monday; naming rights are now for sale, according to a published report. CBS 2’s Mai Martinez reports.
The 100-story skyscraper, John Hancock Center, has been suddenly renamed 875 North Michigan Avenue. The new name, which represents the address of the landmark skyscraper, will exist until the owners, Chicago-based Hearn, seek a new naming-rights deal.
John Hancock Life Insurance Company, U.S.A., which is a wholly owned subsidiary of Canadian insurance company, Manulife Financial Corporation, asked that its name and logos be removed throughout the building immediately. The insurance company built the 1,128-foot supertall skyscraper at Michigan Avenue and Delaware from 1965 to 1969.
John Hancock Financial Network (JHFN) is the retail distribution company of John Hancock Life Insurance Company with headquarters in Boston, Massachusetts.
There have been rumors of renaming for a couple of years, and the John Hancock Center Observatory was renamed 360 Chicago in 2015.
According to real estate data mining company Emporis with headquarters in Hamburg, Germany; 875 North Michigan Avenue is currently the fourth-tallest building in Chicago, the eighth-tallest in the United States, and the 60th tallest building in the world …

Chicago-based Hearn is part of a group of commercial real estate investors that has owned the office and parking assets of the John Hancock Center since 2013.
The insurance and financial company hasn’t been a tenant in the John Hancock Center in Chicago for many years.
John Hancock Tower at 200 Clarendon Street in Boston lost its name after the insurance company similarly asked for the namesake removal, and the Boston skyscraper was simply re-named after American merchant, statesman, prominent Patriot of the American Revolution, President of the Second Continental Congress, and first and third Governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts John Hancock.
The Sears Tower, still widely known by old habits as “Sears Tower”, was renamed the Willis Tower in 2009.
