Mundelein police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 10:13 a.m. to the block of 200 North Prairie Avenue. A neighbor reported the fire when there was heavy smoke showing from the roof of the two-story house.
Firefighters on arrival reported smoke showing. Residents were not home at the time of the fire, but firefighters rescued two cats.
Firefighters activated a MABAS Box Alarm for extra firefighters and equipment to respond to fight the fire and overhaul to prevent further damage to the home. The house was seriously damaged by the fire, and included extensive smoke damage to the second floor. There was water damage on the first floor and basement.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, but apparently started in a small storage area on the second floor. The fire extended into the walls and into the attic, and was about to burn through the roof.
Damage to the house was initially estimated at $150,000.
