Chicago police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 3:15 AM Sunday February 18, 2018 to a report of a fire in an upper floor of the “John Hancock Center” at 175 East Delaware Place Chicago, Il. Police and firefighter/paramedics received a report of a kitchen fire or stove fire in a unit of a high-rise building.
Firefighters contained the fire to a unit on the 52nd floor, just one week after they responded and extinguished a vehicle fire on Sunday February 11, 2018 on the 7th floor of the John Hancock Center parking garage at 149 East Delaware. The name of the “John Hancock Center” was changed to “875 North Michigan” about Tuesday February 13, 2018. Both “875 North Michigan” and “175 East Delaware” are known as addresses for the landmark Chicago skyscraper.
A fire crew, on arrival early Sunday February 18, 2018, reported they’re hearing there is a stove fire on the 52nd floor of the 100 story high-rise by 3:21 a.m.
Truck 3’s crew arrived for a front position located on Delaware Place.
Interior fire companies were arriving on the 52nd floor by 3:24 a.m., and reported no smoke conditions on the floor (in the hallway).
Battalion Chief 1 requested a Still and Box and EMS Plan 1 (precautionary) by 3:25 a.m.
Engine 42’s crew was leading out with a line by 3:26 a.m., and also removed one victim from the residential unit.
No distress calls from residents were declared as of 3:27 a.m.
FOR THIS INCIDENT, the North Stairwell was designated Fire Attack, and the South Stairwell was designated Fire Evacuation.
Firefighters responded to a distress call on the 52nd floor by 3:30 a.m. Truck 6’s crew reported the occupant was fine by 3:35 a.m. after checking on resident.
Aerial Tower 1 crew was assigned to the lobby by 3:33 a.m.
The fire was declared out by 3:34 a.m.
One adult male patient was treated by Chicago Fire Department paramedics, and transported Code Red to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was listed in serious condtion. A Chicago Fire Department report said the patient was “stable” at NWMH.
A distress call was also received on the 87th floor. The resident was checked by Truck 19’s crew, and the occupant was reported OK. Some residents reported they were smelling smoke on upper floors.
Firefighers reported smoke conditions were light at 3:57 a.m. and that all searches were complete and negative.
The Still and Box was struck out at 4:06 a.m. while the EMS Plan 1 was held in place on orders of 2-2-1.
The EMS Plan 1 was secured at 4:08 a.m. on orders of 2-2-1.
Air conditions were clear by 4:15 a.m. and firefighters were conducting a secondary search of stairwells from top to bottom at that time.
Rescue Helicopter 6-8-1 was overhead during firefighter high-rise operations (6-8-2? — both signatures were used).
Firefighters were still checking the well-being of occupants as late as 5:00 a.m.
