A total of 2.75 inches of snow fell in Arlington Heights from about 2:30 PM until 5:30 PM Saturday February 17, 2018. The recent snow period lasted about 3:00 (hours:minutes). The previous snow cover was 3.75 inches. The new snow cover is 6.5 inches on untouched areas over grass.
The snow quality was wet and heavy — good for packing, but difficult for shoveling (although the depth wasn’t difficult). Snow accumulated significantly on previously snow-covered areas, but less on concrete-paved areas, and even less on black asphalt-covered areas.
Fluffy wet snow collected on some concrete surfaces, accumulating to about 0.5″ by 4:00 p.m. CST. At the end of today’s snow event, the total snowfall on concrete surfaces was only 1.5″ at 5:30 p.m. CST.
Black asphalt collected very little snow accumulation (some areas zero) at 4:00 p.m. CST. At the end of today’s snow event, the total snowfall accumulation on black asphalt was only 0.75″ at 5:30 p.m. CST.
The sun is likely to melt all snow on unshoveled private driveways by noon Sunday, especially on black asphalt driveways without shade. Partly cloudy skies are forecast for Sunday morning with a temperature of 38°F at noon, and a high of 42°F from about 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
A high of 59°F is forecast for Monday from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. following temperatures in the 50s starting at noon. Most of the snow cover should be melted by midnight Monday/Tuesday.
Significant rainfall may be measured, especially from 7:00 a.m. Monday through 5:00 p.m. Tuesday. A NWS forecast indicates 1.71″ of rain might be measured from midnight Sunday/Monday until 6:00 p.m. Tuesday.
