What a finish in Evanston, Illinois! Blake Peters shoots full court with a buzzer beater from over 70 feet with a one-hand shot on Friday January 26, 2018.
A missed free throw by Maine South’s Michael George with 2.6 seconds on the clock was rebounded by Evanston Township freshman guard Blake Peters. The 6-foot guard overpowered a Maine South rebounder, possessed the ball, took one dribble, and released the ball with his right hand. It doesn’t appear his left hand ever helped balance the ball for the 70-plus foot toss that was released with about 1.3 second remaining. The basketball was just passing the top of the key when the clock ran out. The ball hit the back of the rim and flew through the net for three points.
Evanston players rushed the court and buried Peters (#15) at half court in front of the scoring table in celebration.
Evanston went on to beat the Geneva Vikings 68-61 on Saturday at Geneva.
Friday’s game was Maine South’s first game since a father of one of the Maine South players was killed in a crash while en route to watch his son play in a tournament in Galesburg. Thomas Gardiner, father of Maine South senior forward Tommy Gardiner, died on January 15 in a single-car accident on Interstate 88 while traveling to watch the Maine South Hawks play in Galesburg’s tournament on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
