Extra Alarm Apartment Fire on South Park Lane Displaces 16 Families in Westmont

ABC 7 Chicago Video: At least 16 families were displaced from an extra alarm fire at a Westmont apartment building at 6703 South Park Lane near Cass Avenue and 67th Street.

Westmont police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 2:00 a.m. Wednesday January 31, 2018 to a report of an apartment fire at 6703 South Park Lane. The fire was elevated to a Box Alarm at 1:52 a.m., a 2ND ALARM at 2:05 a.m. and a 3RD ALARM at 2:41 a.m.

The three-alarm fire destroyed a 3-story brick apartment building, leaving dozens of people temporarily displaced. At least 16 families were displaced.

A MABAS Division 10 Box Alarm on Box #18-02 was called for a fire in a 3-story apartment that was fanned by high steady winds and gusty winds. Winds at O’Hare International Airport at the time the fire was reported were observed from the South 21 MPH, gusting to 31 MPH.

Evacuation Tones for firefighter evacuation were sounded at 2:15 a.m. Fire companies evacuated the building and went to defensive mode at 2:15 a.m. on orders of Westmont 1601.

Elmhurst Tower Ladder 2’s crew and truck were called up to service from staging at 3:04 a.m.

Fire command requested one Pace Bus for warming by 3:15 a.m.

Some residents believe believe the fire started in an outside light fixture that sits right above a doorway. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

About 30 area fire departments responded to the fire with at least 100 firefighters working.

Dozens of people were left homeless when an extra-alarm fire swept through a 16-unit apartment building in west suburban Westmont. CBS 2’s Mike Puccinelli reports.
