Barn Fire Kills 30 Chickens, Alpaca, Goat After 2 Horses Rescued on Old School Rd in Mettawa

Libertyville firefighter/paramedics responded about 1:15 p.m. Tuesday January 10, 2018 to a barn fire that housed several animals at a rural property on Old School Road just east of West Riteway Road on the north side of Old School Road.


Libertyville Fire Department reports that thirty chickens and several alpacas died when a Libertyville barn caught fire Tuesday afternoon about 1:12 p.m. Farmhands moved several horses and goats out of the 40-foot by 40-foot barn, but 30 chickens in coops and several alpacas died. An initial report indicated no animals were killed. The Lake County Sheriff’s Office reported one goat and one alpaca were killed in the barn fire.

Several cats living in the barn also escaped.

No people were reported injured in the fire.

Initially, the cause of the fire was not determined.

Old School Road was closed between St Mary’s Road and Bradley Road during firefighting operations.

Firefighters from seven departments battled the fire.
