Mount Prospect police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 5:16 PM Thursday December 14, 2017 to a report of strong gas odor near Wille Street and Gregory Street Mount Prospect, Il. Fire crews in the area reported possibly a sewer gas type odor — possibly in the area of “Bosch and Northwest Central Dispatch” but firefighters did not detect any odor themselves, apparently.
Firefighters were assuming the odor was sewer gas moving through the area.
A woman also called 9-1-1 to report a very strong odor of gas outdoors right in front of Bosch at about 4:52 p.m.
The two locations are about 18 blocks apart or about 1.5 miles apart — both callers reporting an outdoor odor of gas, downwind from the area of Arthur Avenue and Central Road.
Winds at the time were from the west and northwest 5 MPH, according to the National Weather Service Chicago (O’Hare International Airport).
Several other gas odor complaints occurred in the northwest suburbs Thursday night, and may have been related to weather conditions or atmospheric conditions that caused gas odors to be more detectable, or caused gas to leak into the air more easily.
The area of Arthur Avenue has been the subject of a possible source of a variety of odors from a manufacturing plant that is located on the east side of Arthur Avenue.
People have reported or described the odors as artificial Apple deodorant, a fruity smell, a cleaning solution smell, an unknown chemical smell, and that a smell like Febreze is filling the neighbor.
Frequently the odor complaints have been reported in conditions of light winds downwind of the area in question; or in a wide area when conditions are calm (winds 0-1 MPH) or during stagnant air conditions.
The odors have been reported in the Stonegate neighborhood in Arlington Heights, Melas Park, the Mount Prospect neighborhood east of Melas Park, Mariano’s parking lot in Arlington Heights, and as far north as the area of Palatine Road and Kennicott.
