Owners of a live music venue and gastropub named “Hey Nonny” plan to open Spring 2018 in downtown Arlington Heights at the site of the former People’s Bank branch, 10 South Vail Avenue. People’s bank moved to 41 South Vail Avenue, and was acquired by First Midwest Bancorp in September 2015.
The empty space at 10 South Vail Avenue is south of Campbell Street, across the street from Harmony Park, and next to the Vail Avenue Parking Garage on the west side of Vail Avenue. The space, directly under the Metropolis Ballroom outdoor terrace, is approximately 3,900 square feet.
Village board members unanimously approved the business Monday night at the village board meeting.
The name Hey Nonny refers to a refrain that was popular in songs from the Elizabethan era and is intended to mean, “Let’s be carefree,” according to Chip Brooks, co-owner with Chris Dungan. The phrase is sung in the song Sigh No More, Ladies by William Shakespeare in his comedy Much Ado About Nothing –also produced as a film starring Emma Thompson, Denzel Washington, Keanu Reeves, Kenneth Branagh, and Michael Keaton in 1993.
Both Brooks and Dungan met with the village board Monday, explaining that the new gastropub will feature a “farm-to-table” menu, including locally-sourced meat, fish and produce. Beverages will also be available from local breweries and distilleries.
Dungan explained that the venue “will be a special space where you can enjoy great music … and there’s really nothing like ours in the northwest suburbs.”
The venue’s space, which can seat about 60 customers, will have a movable acoustic wall to accommodate live performances while diners enjoy their meals. The wall will function to separate the music space from the restaurant.
Noise affecting neighbors outside the venue was also an issue of discussion — an issue also discussed in detail when the successful Arlington Ale House around the corner was in the planning stages.
The availability of valet parking was also suggested and discussed. Downtown Arlington Heights has become an attractive center for dining and entertainment.
