Elmhurst police responded about 3:15 p.m. Wednesday December 20, 2017 to a report of a stolen auto or carjacking in the block of 200 Grantley. Initially there was uncertainty whether the case involved a carjacking, but it was later determined the crime was an auto theft.
Several offenders stole a 2016 Infinity SUV that was parked in a residential driveway. The offenders were confronted by the resident, but they drove away, and hit another vehicle near North Avenue and Emroy, about four blocks away.
Police stopped the SUV and arrested seven of the offenders after they bailed out and became involved in a foot pursuit with police. The suspects were captured near Second and Addison about eight blocks from the original auto theft.
A driver in the stolen SUV continued fleeing with the vehicle until he hit an apartment building at Desplaines Avenue and Jackson Boulevard in Forest Park, almost nine miles away. The driver was apprehended at the scene, and no serious injuries were reported. Forest Park Fire Department activated an extra alarm for Technical Rescue Team to assure stabilization of the apartment building in case of structural damage.
Elmhurst police said they had eight people in custody Wednesday evening after the entire ordeal.
