Snow fell on the ski slopes and peaks of the Sierra Nevada and The National Weather Service issued a winter storm advisory for the Lake Tahoe area last Friday night through Saturday night.
Up to 2 feet of snow were forecast for elevations above 8,000 feet, and at least a foot of snow was expected in Donner and Tioga passes and other areas above 6,000 feet.
On Tuesday, November 7, 2017, Estes Park, Colorado had a foot of snow, Fort Collins had about 4 inches of snow and Denver had a light dusting of snow.
A southward displacement of cold air (polar vortex) is expected to begin to affect the Chicago area Thursday (tomorrow) with a high of 39-40°F and then a high of only 34°F on Friday. The upcoming weekend is expected to be slightly warmer, but still below normal.
Another polar vortex breakout with southern displacement is possible just before Thanksgiving, November 23, 2017 — possibly November 18-22. The cold air breakout in the northeast might cause major snow in the Northeast next to the warm Atlantic Ocean.
The normal highs for the first half of November in Chicago range from 56-49°F. The normal highs for the second half of November range from 49-40°F.
