The second week of October 2017, Tesla fired between 400 and 700 workers from its south Bay Area headquarters and production plant, according to San Jose Mercury first reported. Tesla claims employees were fired for subpar job performance rather, not laid off.
“Like all companies, Tesla conducts an annual performance review during which a manager and employee discuss the results that were achieved, as well as how those results were achieved, during the performance period” … “Performance reviews also occasionally result in employee departures.”
— Tesla spokesperson
The cuts included engineers, managers and factory workers, as Tesla missed goals for producing the new lower-cost Model 3 sedan — manufacturing only 260 last quarter for 450,000 customers on a waiting list.
CEO Elon Musk has told investors that Tesla is focused on Model 3 production, and a goal of building 10,000 cars a week — that would take 45 weeks or less than a year to satisfy customers on the waiting list.
