A man whose body was found in the debris of an unincorporated Gurnee house explosion early September 2017 has been identified through DNA testing as Boris Slaskin, age 59, according to a statement by the Lake County Coroner’s Office Tuesday, October 10, 2017.
An autopsy discovered that Boris Slaskin died of smoke inhalation. There were no dental records to confirm Slaskin’s identity, therefore a test was performed on DNA samples, according to Coroner Howard Cooper.
Gurnee police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 6:06 PM Friday September 8, 2017 to a report of a house explosion with fire near Streamwood Drive and Streamwood Court in Gurnee, Illinois. The house was leveled, but a fire was still burning when police and firefighters arrived.
Slaskin was the most recent owner that lived in the home, but the house and property had gone into foreclosure. A new property owner had agreed that Slaskin could stay in the house until September 10, 2017. A Lake County judge had approved the home to go to a sale administered by the sheriff’s office, which was held July 11, 2017, and approved on August 10. The new property owner secured the deed on August 21, 2017, according to Lake County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Christopher Covelli.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident with the Illinois State Fire Marshal’s Office and the Gurnee Fire Department.
