Arlington Heights police received a report sometime after 7:31 PM Saturday September 30, 2017 of a theft at a transaction meeting place at Dunkin’ Donuts, 1010 East Rand Road Arlington Heights, IL. Police received a report that an unknown offender/buyer met with a victim/seller to buy a certified pre-owned Rolex Datejust 36mm watch, valued at $3,800.
The victim/seller counted the money for the watch. The money was contained in an envelope, but the offender/buyer asked for the envelope back so he could seal it for the seller/victim. The offender “sealed” the envelope, returned the envelope to the seller/victim and asked the seller/victim to keep the envelope sealed until the offender/buyer could verify the authenticity of the watch.
The victim and offender parted ways, but when the seller/victim got home, he opened the envelope and realized that it did not contain the same amount of money.
Apparently the envelope was switched by the offender/buyer, when he pretended to take the envelope in order to seal the envelope.
Arlington Heights police did not mention how the victim and offender were introduced to each other before they met.
The crime is reported to have occurred on Saturday, September 30, 2017 between 7:00 PM and 7:30 PM. The elapsed time range including the time the crime could have occurred is 0:30 (hours: minutes).
