The Cook County Board voted 15-2 to end the sweetened beverage tax starting December 1. The vote came just more than two months after the tax took effect August 2.
The penny per ounce soda tax will end beginning December 1, 2017. A $200 million budget deficit is connected to talk of budget cuts and/or new taxes.
Chicago Magazine: Preckwinkle scoffs at the notion that she is vulnerable, that the pop tax could be her Daley parking meter mess. “We have a seven-year record of balanced budgets,” she says. “I run a responsible government without scandal.”
