Police-involved SUV crash with Toyota Camry on Elmhurst Road and Colonial Drive Wheeling.
Wheeling police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 9:31 PM Sunday September 24, 2017 to a police request for a crash with extrication at Elmhurst Road and Colonial Drive Wheeling, Il. Police and firefighter/paramedics arrived to find an unmarked police SUV facing northbound, wrecked just south of McHenry Road.
A white Toyota Camry was further south by about 150 feet, facing southbound, with heavy front-end damage.
Engine 42’s crew on arrival reported a patrolman in a police SUV was seriously injured.
Witnesses reported the driver of a white Toyota Camry continued southbound on Elmhurst Road with the vehicle “popping” after crashing with the unmarked police SUV that was facing northbound. Witness said the driver of the second vehicle fled the scene on foot, after the driver’s Toyota Camry became disabled and stopped.
The police officer, believed to be a Wheeling police officer, was extricated by 9:43 p.m. Witnesses in the neighborhood said he was packaged with a cervical collar and backboard.
The fleeing driver was captured a short time later, and a second ambulance was dispatched for the suspect.
The police officer transported to Level I Trauma Center Advocate Lutheran General Hospital with an extra paramedic on board.
The suspect was apprehended by 9:53 p.m. and was immediately evaluated by paramedics.
The suspect was possibly transported to Glenbrook Hospital by Ambulance 23’s crew.
There was no information available overnight regarding charges.
Elmhurst Road was closed between Dundee Road and McHenry Road for an extended accident investigation until about 1:50 a.m.
