Mariano’s shoppers are be able to order their groceries for pickup through the ClickList app or website (www.marianos.com/list) for a flat fee of $4.95.
Customers are able to shop more than 30,000 items and indicate preferences — such as green bananas or ripe avocados — through the app. A limited selection of prepared foods also will be available online, including items like smoothies and rotisserie chickens. Once the order is filled, a Mariano’s employee calls the person who placed the order to confirm the order and check if anything else is needed.
Alcohol is available for purchase through the service, pending regulatory approval of the given municipality.
Mariano’s stores where pickup is available have added about seven employees per store, trained in food selection and safety. Kroger, which acquired Mariano’s parent Roundy’s in 2015 for about $800 million, has been gradually rolling out ClickList in stores nationally in the past year or so.
Kroger is now competing with online retailers like Amazon/Whole Food and Jet.com, and Wal-Mart, which is expanding its free pickup service nationally but doesn’t offer it in the Chicago area. Walmart is even experimenting with a service that allows delivery personnel to securely place food in shopper’s freezers and refrigerators.
