St Charles police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 8:15 AM Monday August 21, 2017 to a report of an activated fire alarm at St Charles East High School, 1020 Dunham Road St Charles, Il. Police and firefighter/paramedics received a report of an activated fire alarm at St Charles East High School, and smoke showing from the basement of the John B Norris Recreation Center.
Truck 101 on the scene reported evacuation westbound out of the school on the west side of the school at about 8:20 a.m.
Fire command reported black smoke coming from the basement by about 8:25 a.m. — fire call upgraded to a General Alarm.
Fire command requested a special for a Femilab Engine and the St Charles EMA to the scene about 8:50 a.m.
Battalion Chief 100 reports electric, water and sprinkler water shut down to the building.
The Box Alarm was struck out at about 10:13 a.m.
St Charles Fire Department reported the fire, which took about 30 minutes to control, was located in a men’s locker room of the John B. Norris Recreation Center, causing $250,000 worth of damage. Smoke filled throughout the building.
School was not in session, but some Fall sports athletes were in the area. The occupants of the building were evacuated without any initial reports of injury, but one firefighter was transported to Delnor Hospital in Geneva. The firefighter was treated and released for an apparent minor injury.
The Norris Center, which is operated in a partnership agreement between District 303 and park districts, was undergoing summer-long $2.27-million rehabilitation work with construction near completion before the start of the new school year..
