Cook County Sheriff’s Police Department say they responded Thursday, June 22, 2017 to a tip about a live grenade and a grenade launcher at a residence in the block of 4200 West 16th Street in Chicago. Demolition experts from the Cook County Bomb Squad defused a live grenade after a grenade and a grenade launcher were discovered in a Chicago home, according to the Cook County Sheriff’s Police Department says. The block has commercial buildings and brick 2-flat buildings with a Child Care Center on the south side of 16th Street.
On Friday afternoon Cook County Sheriff’s police released a photo of the grenade and grenade launcher on their official Twitter account, saying only that the items were discovered Thursday in Chicago’s 10th District. No arrests were announced, and police did not mention any information about an ongoing investigation.
The location of the discovery is in K-Town in the western part of Chicago’s North Lawndale neighborhood. In recent years the area has had a reputation of large numbers of heroin sales with many customers arriving from the suburbs. Along with the West Garfield Park neighborhood and the East Garfield Park neighborhood, the area is considered a rough part of town.
In late September 2015, dangerous batches of narcotics — apparently heroin laced with the painkiller fentanyl –threatened the lives of at least 74 people on the West Side of Chicago, causing a spike in the number of overdoses. Chicago Fire Department paramedics responded to at least 74 cases in 72 hours, according to Larry Langford, spokesman for the Chicago Fire Department.
