In The Takeaway, Teryn Schaefer recaps the final round of the 117th U.S. Open, where Brooks Koepka tied Rory McIlroy’s tournament-record for the lowest total score in relation to par, Hideki Matsuyama brought the heat with a Sunday 66 and Rickie Fowler notched his 6th major Top 5.
Brooks Koepka entered this 117th United States Open at Erin Hills, with one PGA Tour victory and one European Tour title. This was his fifth U.S. Open, but on Sunday, Koepka won the major title with a 72-hole total of 16-under 272, which tied the tournament record for lowest total under par. The record was previously set by Rory McIlroy at Congressional Country Club in 2011. Koepka also became the seventh consecutive first-time winner in the men’s majors, as the youngest of the seven by a few months.
A final round of 5-under 67 allowed Brooks Koepka to pull away from the pack and record a four shot victory in the 117th U.S. Open. Koepka recorded just one bogey and six birdies — three in a row from the 14th to the 16th where he raced away for his first Major win in 15 attempts.
