Bulmaro Mejia-Maya, 29, charged in the murder of Tiffany Thrasher in her Schaumburg apartment on Clipper Drive, voluntarily agreed to be extradited to Illinois after being arrested in Jacksonville, Florida, Wednesday night.
Bulmaro Mejia-Maya was in court Thursday afternoon. Held without bond, the exact date when Mejia-Maya will arrive in Cook County is unknown. Expectations for the arrival time of his extradition to Cook County are within the next couple of days.
Schaumburg police, on a check for well-being call, found Tiffany Thrasher, 33, dead in her apartment at 2605 Clipper Drive Easter Sunday April 16, 2017 at about 11:45 a.m. Thrasher had been strangled and sexually assaulted, and police say they knew immediately there was foul play involved.
Suspect Bulmaro Mejia-Maya lived in her building about 50 feet away from her unit. Police said he entered her home through a window sometime between late Saturday night and early Sunday morning, committed the criminal sexual assault and murder, and fled to Florida. The trip is about 1100 miles, 16 hours drive time.
Schaumburg police contacted the U.S. Marshal Service. Bulmaro Mejia-Maya was quickly captured and was taken into custody in Jacksonville, Florida Wednesday night. Mejia-Maya was charged with first-degree murder, aggravated criminal sexual assault and home invasion. Thursday he was an inmate with Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Department of Corrections held in the Duval County Jail.
Mejia-Maya’s criminal history includes an outstanding warrant in Utah after failing to appear in court on drug charges. In 2013, he pleaded guilty to battery in Florida.
Court records confirm that Mejia is a Mexican citizen. U.S Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Enforcement and Removal Operations filed a detainer on Mejia after his arrest, according to ICE’s public affairs officer. His current immigration status is not known.
Misty King, Tiffany Thrasher’s sister created a Go Fund Me page Tuesday to raise money for a memorial service.
