NIPAS “SWAT” Response at Courtyard by Marriott on Algonquin Road in Arlington Heights.
On Friday, March 31, 2017, at approximately 9:30 p.m. Arlington Heights Police Department detectives and patrol officers in the area of Arlington Heights and Algonquin Roads heard a gunshot. They went to a motel parking lot just west of Algonquin Road and took three suspects into custody.
Information obtained led to discovery of additional suspects in a hotel room in the 100 block of Algonquin Road — just west of the other hotel property. The suspects in the room did not respond to the door or to calls placed to the room. Since, the suspects refused to exit the room and it was unknown if the suspects had additional weapons, the Northern Illinois Police Alarm System (NIPAS) was activated. An exterior perimeter of the area was immediately established and secured by Arlington Heights police officers, and additional police officers from other agencies were dispatched to assist in perimeter control.
Upon the arrival of NIPAS, which included heavily armed police officers, armored vehicles and command and tactical operations vehicles, a coordinated effort was initiated by Arlington Heights Police Department Supervisors and NIPAS Staff to safely remove the suspects from the room. Communication was established and six suspects eventually exited the room and were taken into custody without further incident.
No one was injured in this incident, the firearm was recovered, and all of the offenders involved were taken into custody. The investigation is ongoing, and Arlington Heights police reported that they are not ready to disclose the identities of the suspects.
