Lake County Sheriff’s deputies and Wauconda firefighter/paramedics responded about 10:11 PM Saturday to a report of car vs pole crash with injuries at Route 176 and Ivanhoe Rd Mundelein, Il. Police and firefighter/paramedics received a report that the crash involved a person trapped in a vehicle on Route 176 between Fairfield Road and Hawley Street.
Lake County sheriff’s deputies arrived first on the scene and discovered a single-vehicle crash involving a 2005 Acura TL, which struck a utility pole, with extensive damage.
The crash appeared to have occurred on a curve on Route 176 near Davis Lake in Lakewood Forest preserve near Ivanhoe Road.
Wauconda Fire Battalion Chief 34 on arrival reported a car vs pole crash with heavy damage, and warned Ambulance 341’s crew to be alert for wires down.
Crews on arrival confirmed extrication needed at about 10:17 p.m.
Battalion Chief 34 requested a Countryside Engine for mutual aid assistance for extrication and Flight for Life for standby by 10:18 p.m.
A fire engine for a Landing Zone was requested, and an updated request for Flight for Life “in the air” was declared by 10:22 p.m. Engine 342 was assigned. Flight for Life replied by 10:23 p.m. that they had a 15 minute ETA.
The Landing Zone was designated at the Dog Park at the northeast corner of Route 176 and Fairfield Road by 10:27 p.m.
Countryside Engine 411, on arrival, was assigned to assist with extrication by 10:28 p.m.
Flight for Life was canceled after paramedics determined the patient’s pulse was not detected by 10:29 p.m. The Lake County Coroner was called to the scene.
Westbound Route 176 was backed up to Hawley Street, and later Route 176 was closed in both directions between Hawley Street and Fairfield Road.
Preliminary investigation shows that the 2005 Acura TL, was driven by James T. Horan, 60, of Park Ridge. The vehicle was traveling eastbound on Route 176, just east of Ivanhoe Road. The Acura was only occupied by Horan. For an unknown reason, the vehicle left the roadway and struck a utility pole. There was extensive damage to the Acura, as well as the utility pole, which caused a power outage in the area. Horan sustained serious injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The crash remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigation Unit and Lake County Coroner’s Office. Investigators will determine if drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash.
A large power outage southeast of crash scene occurred, but it was initially unknown if the power outage was connected to the crash.
