A freight train operating on the CSX line derailed last Tuesday about 4:30 p.m. with no injuries reported.Blue Island police and firefighters responded about 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 7, 2017 after three freight cars left the track. The crashed rail cars did not involve any hazardous materials.
Three covered hopper rail cars extended at least 50 feet perpendicular off the tracks.
According to the CSX website, the CSX Transportation network encompasses about 21,000 route miles of track in 23 states, the District of Columbia and the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Quebec, with transportation network serving some of the largest population centers in the nation. Nearly two-thirds of Americans live within CSX’s service territory.
