Police cordoned off several areas of Dusseldorf central station on Thursday, after an axe-wielding man attacked at least seven people on various platforms at the main station.
Police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 9:00 p.m. Local Time Thursday night to the Düsseldorf central train station “Hauptbahnhof” to a report of an axe attack.
Witnesses reported that a man jumped off the train after it arrived at the station and began striking people with an axe.
Police arrived with heavily armed special forces as the station and evacuated the train station as a helicopter circled overhead.
Initially reported as at least seven people were injured — three with serious injuries and four with minor injuries. Actually a total of ten were injured — 4 women, 5 men injured, and a 13-year-old.
Police believe a 36-year-old male suspect, who is in custody, acted alone. The suspect jumped from a bridge while evading capture by police, and suffered serious injuries. Police are emphasizing the attacker having “paranoid schizophrenia” and saying they are ruling out Islamic Terrorism.
