One North Arlington; One Big Mistake for Temporary Police Station
Unofficial sources off the record have released the possible location of the temporary police station for Arlington Heights while a new police station is under construction at the current location at 200 East Sigwalt Street. The location of the temporary police station is reported to be on the 4th or 5th floor of the 7-story One North Arlington building located at 1500 West Shure Drive near Route 53 and Dundee Road in Arlington Heights. The site is less than 1,000 feet from the Arlington Heights border with Palatine, Illinois and is closer to Deer Park Town center Shopping Center near Lake Zurich than most addresses in Arlington Heights. Every address south of Oakton Street in Arlington Heights is further from the proposed temporary police station site than Deer Park Town Center.
The location has not yet been confirmed by officials, and if the far northwest location is the true site, the choice could be considered reckless, exposing police officers and residents to delays and danger.
One North Arlington is a low-rise commercial building, 7-stories tall and mostly used for commercial office space. The location is probably one of the worst locations for a temporary police station because of the long distance to most addresses in Arlington Heights.
Village officials will might explain that the police department will be able to provide adequate coverage to the entire Village of Arlington with patrol vehicles on the street or possibly using a substation location. However, the chosen location in the northwest corner of Arlington Heights is located up to 9 to 11 miles away southeast, which coincides to normal traffic times of up to 17 to 20 minutes, and 30 minutes or greater in traffic jams or winter weather conditions.
If the report of the chosen location at 1500 West Shure Drive is accurate, emergency response times for police, especially backup units, will be delayed. Patrol vehicles will still respond in good time from their beats, but returns to the station for a variety of duties will be tedious and time-consuming. Responses of backup units or police supervisors from the temporary police station will likely show serious delays. Police responses for school emergencies requiring multi-unit responses at John Hersey High School and at all schools south of Thomas Street are cause for concern regarding backup units that would respond from the temporary police station.
Also, police officers are likely to have a difficult time returning to the station due to long travel times. For example, at the evening rush hour, westbound Dundee Road is frequently backed up almost all the way to Arlington Heights Road from Route 53.
The temporary police station site is closer to most of Deer Grove Forest Preserve in Palatine than half of the entire Village of Arlington Heights.
The temporary police station site is closer to Palatine High School in Palatine than about 75 percent of the Village of Arlington Heights.
