Arlington Heights police responded about 3:40 PM to a car crash involving a light pole near Arlington Heights Road and Maude Avenue in the southbound lanes of Arlington Heights Road.
The light pole was leaning precariously on an angle, so the southbound lanes on Arlington Heights Road have been closed for an extended period this Christmas Eve for repairs from utilities, Com Ed and public works.

Southbound traffic is being diverted to westbound Lillian Street and then southbound Evergreen Avenue to Thomas Street. At least 30 motorists attempted to disobey the road block marked with red flares. Several motorists attempted to cut through the PNC Bank lot. When a police officer moved her police car to set up flares at the exit of the PNC bank, southbound cars at Lillian drove over the flares that had already been set up at the intersection.
Police backup was eventually called to control more exits and stop alternate routes that led to the hazard.
