On Thursday September 15, 2016, the mayor of Rolling Meadows, Tom Rooney, was elected to be the new State Senator for the 27th District of Illinois.
“It is an honor to have been elected to be the Senator for the 27th District,” said Rooney. “Being chosen to represent the great people of our district is truly a privilege, and I look forward to working alongside my fellow lawmakers to ensure that state government is responsive and accountable to the people of this state.”
Rooney, who has presided as mayor of Rolling Meadows since 2011, is married and the father of four children. The newly elected Senator is also a twenty-year, national award-winning public high school Economics teacher and a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves. Rooney was elected by the 27th Legislative District Committee, created by law, to fill the vacancy left after former Senator Matt Murphy (R-Palatine) stepped down from office on September 15.
“This is an exciting time in Illinois government and I believe there is a real opportunity to make a difference and bring about real reform in state government,” stated Rooney. “Illinois has so many great advantages and such potential. I’m looking forward to making Illinois a state where people want to live, students want to learn and businesses want to operate.”
Rooney plans to step down as Rolling Meadows mayor in the coming weeks to serve out the remainder of the term in office, which is up for reelection in November of 2018.
“I am ready to meet Illinois’ biggest challenges head on and hit the ground running when we return to Springfield in November,” said Rooney. “I am so blessed by this opportunity and will do my best to represent the needs of my constituents as I do my part to help place Illinois back on the path to success.”
Illinois’ 27th Senate District is in the northwest Chicago suburbs and includes all or part of Arlington Heights, Barrington, Des Plaines, Hoffman Estates, Inverness, Mt. Prospect, Palatine, Prospect Heights, and Rolling Meadows.
