Seaside Park police responded to a suspicious unattended backpack, which ended up involving a pipe bomb explosion in the Jersey Shore town just before the start of the Semper Five run charity 5K race. The third annual Semper Five run to benefit US Maines and US Navy Sailors was canceled when the suspicious package was discovered.

Police reported that runners had been scheduled to pass by the area of the suspicious package and explosion about the time the blast occurred, but the start of the race had been delayed and then canceled after the unattended backpack was found. Police also immediately cleared the boardwalk and beach area.
No injuries were reported after the pipe bomb explosion, which occurred about 9:30 a.m. Saturday. The pipe bomb was in a garbage can when it exploded. The bomb was NOT a controlled-detonation by police.
Local, state and federal law enforcement agencies are investigating.
