Mundelein Man Dead, Four Others Shot in Two Shooting Incidents Near the University of Illinois Campus in Champaign

A Mundelein man was killed and five people injured after two shootings near the University of Illinois campus in Champaign, Ill. just after midnight Sunday.

Champaign Police responded about 12:38 a.m. Sunday to a report of shots fired in the block of 300 East Green Street about three blocks west of the Student Unit and Main Quad of the University of Illinois. Police and paramedics found four victims with gunshot wounds on East Green Street on the western edge of the University of Illinois campus district. All four shooting victims were transported to area hospitals, police said. At least five shots were heard in a video captured by Kathryn Lawlor, a witness who sent the video to Daily Illini Editor-in-Chief Masaki Sugimoto.

One of the victims, George Korchev, age 21, of Mundelein, a student who was walking near the area when the shooting took place, was transported to Carle Foundation Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 1:02 a.m.

The three other injured shooting victims suffered “non-critical injuries” and are expected to survive. A fifth person was injured while running from the gunfire and getting hit by a vehicle on East Green Street. Apparent minor injuries were reported in the vehicle vs pedestrian incident.

About 30 minutes after the first shooting, police responded at 1:08 a.m. to another report of shots fired in the 700-block of South State Street just south of downtown Champaign, and just under a mile west of the first shooting scene. One person was wounded and transported from the second shooting scene to an area hospital with a “non-critical” gunshot wound. Police said the shootings may be related. The second scene happens to be located just south of the Champaign Public Library near downtown Champaign outside the UIUC campus district.

As of 8:00 a.m. Sunday, no suspects were in custody.
