ATS Road Safety Video: Student in a crosswalk hit by a pickup truck making a right turn, and student crossing from school bus hit by a pickup truck.
Careless drivers hit two Austin Independent School District children as they exited a school bus this past week. Both incidents were captured by ATS CrossingGuard® cameras on a school bus.
In the past week, Austin Independent School District police said more than 900 citations were issued to drivers who passed school buses illegally. During the last semester, AISD police said 6,600 citations were issued. Police reminded students and parents that they should remain cautious even though the law gives them the right of way while exiting school buses.
CrossingGuard® School Bus Stop Arm Enforcement Systems are designed to reduce the number of school bus passing violations and protect the safety and wellbeing of their students.
CrossingGuard® cameras are installed on school buses for photo enforcement with automatic violation detection to complete violation processing.
According to American Traffic Solutions, high-resolution cameras installed on the exterior of school buses automatically capture images and video of violating vehicles as they illegally pass the stop arm.
In addition to capturing video, the system automatically embeds a data bar which includes GPS coordinates, date and time of the violation, and other relevant violation information used to create a comprehensive evidence package.
Once the system captures the full violation package, it automatically sends the violation data to ATS’ remote back office via a secure private cellular network for review and processing.
A final review of the violation image and video is conducted by law enforcement personnel, who then may approve or reject the violation. If the violation is approved, a citation is issued and mailed to the vehicle owner. Payment collection and court support are also included as part of the program’s complete end-to-end solution.
