One police officer was transported to Scripps Mercy Hospital in Hillcrest in a police Crown Victoria squad car where doctors and medical teams were unable to save his life. Another police officer was transported by ambulance to UCSD Medical Center. Both police officers were in the San Diego Police Department Gang Unit.
The suspect was also transported to UCSD Medical Center with a gunshot wound.
The second police officer that survived the initial encounter was out of surgery about 4:15 a.m. PDT Friday. The late-night shooting occurred just south of downtown San Diego in the Southcrest neighborhood. According to police, one suspect is in custody with a gunshot wound and police continue to search for other possible suspects, police said.
One suspect is in custody, but police were still searching for other possible suspects overnight.
At a press conference early Friday morning, San Diego Police Department Chief Shelley Zimmerman reported the officers were conducting a traffic stop shortly before 11 p.m. Thursday in San Diego’s Southcrest neighborhood when the shooting happened immediately after the police officers conducted the traffic stop.
Backup police officers arrived on scene, and found both officers with gunshot wounds. One officer, who suffered multiple gunshot wounds, was taken in a patrol car to Scripps Mercy Hospital in Hillcrest. Both police officer suffered gunshot wounds to the upper torso.

Following the shooting, police began a manhunt for any additional possible suspects, searching through the 3800 block of Boston Avenue and surrounding areas. A shelter-in-place was issued for the area of 3800 block of Boston Avenue and areas nearby — just west of the Interstate 15 and Interstate 5 interchange near Barrio Logan and Logan Heights neighborhoods.
