VIDEO: Intense fire before gas supply to large gas line was shut off in Melvindale, Michigan.
Melvindale firefighters responded about 3:00 a.m. Saturday to a natural gas explosion at Allen Road and Greenfield Road after car crashed through a fence at a DTE Energy training facility and hit a large natural gas line.
A building at the site caught fire and the car that hit the pipe was totally consumed by fire.
The driver was transported to Beaumont Hospital in Dearborn, Michigan. His condition was not released.
He is reported to have been going southbound on Greenfield Road when his vehicle left the roadway.
A building at DTE Energy was also severely damaged by fire.
Twelve streets and as many as 18 blocks were evacuated because of the large fire. The evacuation was lifted at about 9:00 a.m.
DTE Energy provides electricity to most of Southeast Michigan, and provides gas to some areas in southeast Michigan. DTE Gas is the largest natural gas provider in Michigan and has more than 18,900 miles of pipeline serving 1.2 million residential, commercial and industrial customers in Michigan. The gas supply was shut off in about 10 minutes.

Some in Melvindale thought this morning’s loud boom was a fireworks display, not a gas explosion.
