On Friday, June 19, 2016, about 8:00 a.m., a man attempted to abduct a woman who was on her way to work. The victim said two men pulled up in a car and tried to abduct her near 27th Street and Keeler Avenue in Chicago.
The woman fell to the ground and fought the offenders off while neighbors heard her screams and came to her aid.
Cell phone video shows one alleged attacker struggling to escape; but neighbors, including a 14-year boy, held him down.
“I woke up scared. It was almost like someone was trying to kill her because she was screaming really loud. She was screaming, “Help me! Help me!” said neighbor Irma Ruiz.
The 20-year-old female victim told ABC7 she was walking to a bus stop when a man snuck up on her and grabbed her from behind to attempt to abduct her.
The victim said she fell to the ground and was dragged for several yards until she grabbed onto a wrought-iron fence.
Eberardo Delapaz, who was one of the people that helped subdue the suspect said, “There was no time to get dressed up or nothing, so I ran outside.”
At one point, the offender broke free from neighbors and ran into the street. He bumped into a stopped vehicle, which gave the 14-year-old boy time to catch up to him, and hold him down.
Delapaz and other neighbors held the offender down on the ground until Chicago police arrived.
“The guy was saying he wasn’t doing nothing. He was like, ‘Why are you guys holding me down? Let me go! Let me go!’ and we’re like, “No, dude, you’re going to stay here until the cops get here,” Delapaz said.
The woman says she suffered scrapes on her back and leg but she wasn’t seriously injured. She said she did not know the offender she’s grateful to those who came to her aid.
“This is a community watch neighborhood, so all the neighbors, we communicate with each other. So this block is pretty safe, I consider it,” Delapaz said.
Authorities report 35-year-old suspect Juan Manuel Robles, who is 5’2″ 125 LBS is in custody, is charged with Kidnapping/Force or Threat. Sunday morning the suspect, who lives in the Lawndale neighborhood, remained held at Cook County Jail on $850,000 bond.
