Evanston police responded Saturday afternoon to a report of attempted child luring, and are asking for help in finding a man who tried to lure a 12-year-old girl into his car.
The 12-year-old was walking in the 200 block of Main Street in north suburban Evanston about 1:40 p.m. when a man in a white SUV pulled up to her, according to an Evanston Police Department news release.
The man asked the girl for help locating a coffee shop in the area, and asked the girl to show him where the shop was located. He got out of his vehicle, opened up the passenger door of his car, and asking her to get inside, according to Evanston Police Department.
The girl refused to go inside the car and walked away from his vehicle. The male suspect got back into the SUV and was last seen eastbound on Main Street.
The suspect was described as a male Hispanic between 20 and 30 years old. He is shot in statute and has a goatee. His vehicle was described as a newer white sports utility vehicle, possibly a Chevrolet Traverse. The man told the girl his name was Jose.
Main Street and Michigan Avenue is located southeast of downtown Evanston, and south of the Northwestern University campus.
Evanston Police Department urges anyone with information about the suspect to contact Evanston police at 847-866-5000.
