EgyptAir Flight 804 vanished from radar on its way from Paris to Cairo with 66 people aboard, Greek authorities said. CNN’s Chris Cuomo and Flying Magazine Contributing Editor Les Abend have more details.

EgyptAir Flight MS804 from Paris to Cairo disappeared from radar over the Mediterranean Sea about halfway between Karpathos and Cairo with 66 people on board early Thursday.

Summary facts …

• Greek controllers tried to reach the Airbus A320 when it crossed through Greek airspace but got no response.

• When the MS804 reached Cairo airspace north of Egypt heading southeast, it swerved sharply left (northwest) then plunged from 37,000 feet into the Mediterranean Sea.

• The disappearance occurred about when the aircraft would begin the descent for approach to Cairo.

• A distress signal was detected in the vicinity of Flight MS804’s disappearance from radar 2 hours later, but it could have come from another source. The military has not initially confirmed that it detected a distress signal.

• Egypt’s civil aviation minister reports the cause of the disappearance is more likely terrorism than a technical issue.
