Former Arlington Heights resident and Arlington High School graduate Prerna Mona Khanna or “Dr. Mona” was one of 100 first generation immigrants who were awarded for going beyond the call of duty in their professions with the 2016 Ellis Island award at a special ceremony at Ellis Island in New York on May 7, 2016. The award program – launched in 1986 – is sponsored by the National Ethnic Coalition of Organizations.
Khanna is the medical contributor to Fox 32 News in Chicago. The triple board-certified doctor has also received an Emmy Award for her reporting on health issues.
Khanna said she is passionate about eradicating polio, and annually travels on medical missions and as a disaster volunteer. She has received the 2013 American College of Physicians Volunteerism Award, the 2012 Institute of Medicine of Chicago Global Health Humanitarian Award, and the 2008 University of Illinois Alumni Humanitarian Award. For her pioneering work in medicine and media, Khanna was awarded the 2012 Chicago Foundation for Women “Breaking Barriers” Award.
Khanna was the first physician to report from “Ground Zero,” the site of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in New York City; she simultaneously delivered news reports while also providing first-hand care for those injured in the attack.
