Palatine police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 4:25 PM Sunday to a report of a garage fire at 251 West Wilson Street Palatine, IL. The first fire companies pulled a hose line and extinguished the fire from the exterior, while other firefighters stretched a supply line to a fire hydrant. Additional firefighters accessed the interior of the garage and extinguished a small amount of fire with a pressurized water extinguisher. Firefighters also completed overhaul of the burned area checking for additional fire extension. The fire was declared under control at 4:34 p.m. Firefighters had to open the exterior rear wall and soffits of the building to ensure the fire was completely out. Firefighters continued to ventilate smoke and gases from the structure and wet down burnt mulch and compost material behind the garage.
No civilians or firefighters were injured in the fire, which caused minor to moderate damage to the detached garage. Damage estimates are not available at the time of this release, and the fire was determined to be accidental by a Palatine Fire Department investigator.
The fire was fought by 12 firefighters, staffing two engines, one ladder truck, one rescue squad and one ambulance which responded to the scene along with one command officer and one Fire Investigator.
Palatine Police officers assisted at the scene with traffic and crowd control.
The Palatine Fire Department reminds everyone to ensure coals and ashes from approved outdoor recreational fireplaces are completely out and cool prior to disposal. Disposal should be outside in a metal can or outdoors at least 50 feet away from any structures.
