Comedian, actor and producer Garry Shandling has passed away at the age of 66. He is known for “The Larry Sanders Show” and “It’s Garry Shandling’s Show.”
Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics responded to Garry Shandling’s home about 10:40 a.m. Thursday and transported Shandling to St. Johns Hospital in Santa Monica after he suffered a heart attack. He was pronounced dead at St. Johns Hospital after an apparent heart attack.
Shandling was born in Chicago and raised in Tucson, Arizona. Shandling was majoring in electrical engineering and was working towards a marketing degree at the University of Arizona, when he shifted career gears to comedy. He started selling to sitcoms and worked as a gust host on the Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson.
He was a contender to replace Johnny Carson after he retired. When Jay Leno was chosen, Shandling moved on to create “It’s Garry Shandling’s Show” for Showtime which ran from 1986 until 1990.
His showmanship moved to HBO as The Larry Sanders Show, which was an American television sitcom set in the office and studio of a fictional late-night talk show.
Shandling never married. He lived with former Playboy model Linda Doucett from 1987 until 1994.
