Marengo firefighter/paramedics and McHenry County Sheriff’s police responded about 6:15 p.m. Wednesday to a collision involving a vehicle and a horse on the loose on Grant Highway (US20) south of Coral, Illinois near Marengo.
A female driver was severely injured in her Honda CR-V when the weight of the horse crushed the roof of the vehicle. The horse was also severely injured at the scene north of Remke’s Garage — an automotive repair shop. The horse was put down because of the serious injuries.
A medical transport helicopter was called to the scene to transport the driver of the vehicle. The female motorist, who was the only person in the small SUV, was transported to St. Anthony Medical Center in Rockford.
Union firefighters assisted Marengo firefighters.
