A New York company called Gotham Greens has built what its owners claim is the largest rooftop greenhouse in the world on Chicago’s far South Side.
The world’s largest rooftop greenhouse is located on top of Method soap factory on East 111th Street in Chicago.
In November 2016, the urban agriculture company Gotham Greens opened a 75,000-square-foot rooftop greenhouse on top of a 300×500 square foot (75,000 sq ft) building — the home of the Method soap factory in the Pullman neighborhood.
Chicago’s harsh winters actually was an attraction for Gotham Greens — a company that sells fresh greens to grocers and restaurant. An outdoor farm in the Chicago area might have 3 crops per year, but the Gotham Greens greenhouse is expected to have about 25 crops per year.
The fully enclosed, sterile greenhouses of Gotham Greens (there are locations in New York, too) minimize pest and disease risk. Our crops are protected against inclement weather and extreme weather events ensuring reliable and consistent yields. Sophisticated control systems manage heating, cooling, irrigation and plant nutrition. Our methods conserve precious natural resources.
Gotham Greens are available for retail purchase at Sunset Foods, Treasure Island Foods, Whole Foods Market, and other smaller grocer locations.
Produce grown pesticide-free at the Chicago Pullman location include the following as of February 2016 …
Butterhead lettuce, Pullman Green Leaf, Red Oak Leaf, Endless Summer Mix, Arugula, Asian Blend, Baby Kale Medley, Basil, Windy City Crunch, Bok Choy, Gourmet Lettuce Medley, Green Oak Leaf, and Chicago Crisp.
Spanning almost two acres, the climate-controlled greenhouse facility, owned and operated by Gotham Greens, is located on the second floor rooftop of Method Products manufacturing plant. The unique partnership between Gotham Greens and Method Products, leaders in their respective industries — urban farming and eco-friendly cleaning products — is a groundbreaking vision for the 21st century manufacturing facility. Method’s factory, designed by William McDonough + Partners, is the world’s first LEED-Platinum certified manufacturing plant in its industry.
