On Tuesday, February 23, 2016, a restored fire truck will be in downtown Palatine, exactly where it was 43 years ago, when three firefighters were killed in the basement of a Ben Franklin store.
Warren Ahlgrim, Richard Freeman and John Wilson were trapped in the basement at a smoky fire scene and were overcome by smoke and carbon monoxide on February 23, 1973. The restored truck, purchased by the Village of Palatine in 1969, was Palatine’s first aerial truck
Palatine holds its annual memorial service in memory of the firefighters at the Firefighters Memorial at Brockway and Slade streets. The ceremony starts at 9 a.m.
