FBI: 18-Minute Gap in San Bernardino Shooters’ Movement; Help Sought from Public

The FBI says they are unable to account for 18 minutes of Syed Rizwan Farook and Tashfeen Malik’s movements on the day of the San Bernardino shootings.

The FBI has accounted for 342 minutes of Syed Rizwan Farook and Tashfeen Malik’s movements on the day of the San Bernardino shootings, but are unable to account for 18 minutes of their movements between 12:59 p.m. and 1:17 p.m. on December 2, 2015.

The FBI wants to know whether or not the couple stopped at any residences or any businesses during those 18 minutes.

8:47 a.m.
Farook arrived at the holiday meeting

10:37 a.m.
Farook left the meeting –leaving behind a book bag containing pipe bombs.

10:56 a.m.
Syed Farook returned to the meeting with his wife Tashfeen Malik — shooting people outside the room and then entering a room to continue shooting. The couple killed a total of 14 people and wounded 22.

Farook and Malik then spent time driving back and forth in an area near the shooting. The FBI can account for at least two stops.

11:45 a.m.
The couple stopped at a small lake in a park north of the shooting. Authorities searched the lake for several days last month but found no evidence tied to the shootings.

After the lake visit, they resumed driving and at 12:59 “they went dark for 18 minutes,” according to Bowdich.

Bowdich didn’t give any details about a parking stop that occurred sometime during the timeline.

Bowdich asked that people who might have information about the couple’s timeline to call 1-800-CALLFBI (1-800-225-5324).

The FBI has also asked people to check their cell phone images that they took on that day — including incidental backgrounds of the images. The FBI also asked for business operators in the area to recheck surveillance video.

Police detectives looking for Farook saw the couple at 2:52 p.m. which initiated a chase and a shootout which resulted in the terrorists’ deaths at about 3:00 p.m.

The FBI does not know why Farook and Malik were driving back and forth, mostly on interstates. Whether they were searching secondary targets has not been ruled out.

AUDIO: San Bernardino Police radio communications regarding gathering information and identification of Syed Farook as a suspect, and a possible background check of Syed Farook by Los Angeles Police Department one week before the mass shooting.

Ironically, in a period from 11:40 a.m. to 12:23 PM, law enforcement officers could be heard on police radio communications minimally gathering identification information on Syed Farook.
