Illinois State police and North Maine firefighter/paramedics responded about 1:46 AM Friday to a report of crash with injuries at Northbound I-294 near Central Road Des Plaines. Police and firefighter/paramedics received a report that tow truck and a silver Mazda were involved in a crash on the left shoulder. The crash was reported to have occurred between Golf Road and Willow Road. The crash was also reported to have occurred at Mile Post 47 (PHOTO).
The tow truck driver was apparently pulling off to the left shoulder to assist a motorist when the silver Mazda rear-ended the tow truck at high speed.
Firefighters extricated the driver out of the vehicle in a short time. The driver of the Mazda, identified as Elgin resident Kevin Horn, age 27, was transported to Glenbrook Hospital, where was pronounced dead. A second source reported the driver was transported to Level I Trauma Center Lutheran General Hospital.
The tow truck driver did not report injuries immediately after the crash.
