VIDEO: Apartment fire immediately after it was extinguished by Wheeling firefighters early Saturday morning about 2:00 a.m.
Wheeling police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 1:47 AM Saturday to an activated fire alarm followed by callers’ report of a fire in a third floor apartment Pine Hill Apartments, 500 Manda Lane Wheeling, IL. Police were first on the scene and rushed into the burning apartment building. One police officer was met with smoke to the floor on the third while residents were evacuating by a stairwell.
Police helped a child with a burn injury on the south side of the building by about 1:54 a.m. One adult was treated initially at the time the child was treated. A third adult was treated and transported about 20 minutes later.
The fire was visible coming out of windows and the sliding glass door on the balcony on the north side of the building.
Engine 42’s crew possibly used their deck gun to hit the fire coming out of the exterior north wall of the apartment building. Engine 23’s crew was assigned the interior fire attack.
The fire was “knocked” by about 2:02 a.m. but firefighters continued to hit hot spots and check for extension.
Wheeling Fire Department requested a box alarm about 2:30 a.m. for extensive overhaul of the burned out apartment unit.
