Niles police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 10:59 PM Thursday to a hit-and-run crash with personal injury in front of Papa John’s, 8600 Golf Road Niles, IL. Police initially received a report that a person was struck by an auto, and soon learned that the incident was a hit-and-run.
The offending vehicle was described as an SUV that was westbound on Golf Road.
According to Niles police, the man hit was identified as Takeusz Dec, age 55.
Dec was transported by crews from Niles Fire Department Ambulance 2 and Engine 2 to Level I Trauma Center Advocate Lutheran General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 11:35 p.m. Thursday.
According to Niles police, Dec was crossing Golf Road and walking north when he was hit by a “light-colored” sport utility vehicle that was traveling west on Golf. A witness reported the information to police.
The witness reported that the SUV did not stop after striking Dec, police said.
The Cook County medical examiner’s office ruled that the cause of the man’s death was multiple injuries caused by the impact of the SUV.
According to Niles Police Sgt. Robert Tornabene, Dec was not in a crosswalk when he was hit. Police think Dec was walking home when he was struck hit.
The light-colored SUV is believed to have front-end damage.
The Major Crash Assistance Team division of the North Regional Major Crimes Task Force is investigating the hit-and-run incident.
