Two F-16s in a flyover in Chicago.
Flyovers aren’t always fighter jets. Helicopters, such as the UH-60 Black Hawk, or a large cargo plane, such as a C-17 Globemaster III also participate. Flyovers have to be carefully timed, usually so that the fighter jets appear at the end of the national anthem.
In order to time the flyover at the end of the national anthem requires (1) backed-out calculations for takeoff, distance and air speed; (2) a pre-specified holding area where aircraft can circle or hover to stage in the area in the case of a delayed singing of the national anthem or and altered pre-arrival time; and (3) a forward air controller inside the stadium for last-minute guidance.
F-16s are utilized by the U.S. Air Force, Air Force Reserve Command, and Air National Guard units, and are also used by the USAF aerial demonstration team, the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds air show team, and as an adversary/aggressor aircraft by the United States Navy. The F-16 has also been procured to serve in the air forces of 25 other nations.
