A Severe Thunderstorm Warning issued at 10:14 p.m. brought heavy rain but little cloud-to-ground lightning.
Thunderstorm with tops at about 40,000 feet had been stable since development near Rockford during the hour’s track to the northwest suburbs and Arlington Heights. Predicted hail size was as high as 2.0 inches.
Hail about .25-inch or less was falling about 10:40 p.m.

A constant rumbling like a freight train was heard for a period of at least 10 minutes; however, no Tornado Warning was issued as of 10:40 p.m. The rumbling is possibly from constant thunder with constant cloud-to-cloud lightning at upper elevations. The constant rumbling was heard from about 10:25 p.m. until about 10:40 p.m.
There was little cloud-to-ground lightning with this storm.
Lake County Illinois lightning during tornado and severe thunderstorm as viewed from Arlington Heights. Lightning was continuous as the storm, which was a moderate band about the length of Lake County north-to-south, moved east to Lake Michigan.
A more severe storm hit Lake County Illinois about 8:45 p.m. just before the Arlington Heights storm that hit Arlington Heights and the northwest suburbs at about 10:30 p.m. Several photos of tornados were captured, and the Grayslake Fire Department activated a MABAS Box Alarm for damage in Grayslake.

The Lake County storm at about 8:45 p.m. was a smaller cell that packed more energy than the larger line of storms that passed through Arlington Heights at about 10:30 p.m.
