Popular Chicago weatherman Harry Volkman died at age 89, Thursday, August 20, 2015 after a long illness.
Volkman spent more than 50 years as a TV weatherman and meteorologist.
Most recently, Harry Volkman worked for Fox 32, following his 18 years with WBBM. He was one of the first television weathermen, beginning his career with KOTV in 1950 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Volkman is known for broadcasting the first televised tornado warning.
Harry Volkman came to Chicago in 1959, working first at WMAQ, then WGN, then WBBM, and then Fox. Harry’s longest run was as a TV weatherman at CBS 2 from 1978 to 1996.
While visiting people out in communities, it became a tradition to present him with a flower, which he frequently wore later in the day on his television weather forecasts.
Volkman is the father of three sons and a daughter. His son, Ed, was a co-host on the morning radio show “Eddie & JoBo” on WBBM-FM B96.
