Kristie Lu Stout examines the future of Microsoft’s flagship operating system with Tom Warren of The Verge
Microsoft Edge is the web browser developed by Microsoft and included in the company’s Windows operating system — officially released with Windows 10 on July 29, 2015. Edge has replaced Internet Explorer as the default browser on Windows 10. Microsoft Edge will also be the default browser of the forthcoming release of Windows 10 for smartphones and small tablets.
Internet Explorer 11, which was previously released for WIndows 8.1 and Windows 7, will be available on Windows 10 as an alternative to Microsoft Edge incase Edge is not compatible with a web page. IE 11 will remain nearly identical to the Windows 8.1 version and is not using the Edge engine as was previously announced.
A second major feature is a personal assistant known as Cortana which works as an extension to the Start Menu, and will also be available on Android, iOS, and XBox. Cortana includes Siri-like features with access to weather and traffic conditions, sports and biographies; calculations and conversions; a notebook, reminders; and a music recognition service.
The Verge: “Windows 10 is a realization of Microsoft’s big dream to have a single Windows that runs across all its products.”
Word, Excel and PowerPoint are all available free as stripped down office apps.
